Life Means Union, Death Means Separation

One of my favorite pastors once said that in the Bible, death means separation. Intuitively it made sense. When you die, your spirit separates from your body. Similar examples could be made with death of a company, a nation, a vision, etc.

I think I just found where it says that in the Bible.

“For as the body apart from the spirit is dead, so also faith apart from works is dead.” James‬ ‭2‬:‭26‬ ‭ESV‬‬

If you separate the body from the spirit, the body is dead. If you separate faith and works, faith is dead.

“But as for the cowardly, the faithless, the detestable, as for murderers, the sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars, their portion will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur, which is the *second death.*”Revelation‬ ‭21‬:‭8‬ ‭ESV‬‬

The first death is when the spirit leaves the body. The second is when you are divided from God forever.

The other side of the coin is that life means unity or oneness.

“And this is eternal life, that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent.” ‭‭John‬ ‭17‬:‭3‬ ‭ESV‬‬

Knowing God personally (unity, togetherness) is the definition of eternal life.

John 3:16 says as much.

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish [death, separation] but have eternal life [be together with him both now and in the next life].” ‭‭John‬ ‭3‬:‭16‬ ‭ESV‬‬
